It's almost always the first question on a site visit — and understandably so. Air conditioning is a significant investment, and the figures you find online vary so widely that they're rarely useful. This article gives you real prices for the Marbella market, based on 26 years of installations across the Costa del Sol.
The short version: a single split unit installed costs from around €1,200, a whole-home multi-split system from €4,000, and a ducted system from €3,000 depending on scope. But the range within each category is wide, and the factors that determine where you land on it are worth understanding before you ask for quotes.
Before getting into numbers, it's worth separating initial cost from total cost. Energy efficiency ratings — ESEER, SCOP — are a useful benchmark, but they're not the whole picture. A quality unit, properly installed and serviced annually, will typically run for 20 years. One that was cheap to buy, poorly installed, or from a brand whose parts are hard to source in Spain, will cost significantly more over the same period — in repairs, in replacement, and in electricity. The clients who are happiest with their investment are almost always the ones who thought about the full 15–20 year picture rather than just the installation invoice.
What affects the price?
No two installations are identical. The main variables that move the price up or down are:
- Number of zones — each additional indoor unit adds cost, both for the unit itself and for the installation work involved.
- System type — wall-mounted splits are less expensive to install than ducted systems, which require ceiling void access and more complex pipework.
- Brand and product range — within any brand there are entry-level, mid-range and premium product lines. The difference in efficiency and longevity is real.
- Pipework run length — the further the outdoor unit is from the indoor unit, the more copper pipe, insulation and cable is needed. A rooftop installation or a long exterior run adds to the cost.
- Access and complexity — high ceilings, solid concrete walls, restricted outdoor unit placement and tight internal routes all take more time.
Installation costs
The figures below are indicative ranges for supply and installation in the Marbella area. They assume standard residential access and a reasonable pipework run. Unusual site conditions or electrical upgrades will move costs toward or beyond the upper end.

Single split units
The most common residential installation — one outdoor unit connected to one indoor unit. The price range reflects the difference between an entry-level unit for a small bedroom and a premium inverter unit for a large open-plan living area. The capacity you need is determined by the room size, ceiling height, glazing, orientation, and how well the building is insulated.
Multi-split systems — wall-mounted
One outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor units, each with independent control. The most practical solution for villas and larger apartments where you want to condition several rooms from a single outdoor installation. A 3-zone wall-mounted system typically covers a living area and two bedrooms, and is the most common whole-home solution we install.
Multi-split systems — ducted
The same outdoor unit principle, but with ducted indoor units concealed in the ceiling void. Air is distributed through grilles, leaving no visible indoor unit. Ducted systems are quieter in the room, aesthetically cleaner, and better suited to open-plan spaces and new builds. They cost more to install because the ceiling work, ductwork and grilles add significant time and materials.
Standalone ducted systems
A single ducted unit distributing conditioned air to multiple areas through a network of ducts from one indoor unit. Common in properties with a suitable ceiling void throughout, and a cost-effective solution for whole-home coverage where the layout allows it.

Why brand matters for long-term cost
Installation price is only part of the picture. A system that runs for eight months of the year in the Costa del Sol climate will be serviced, and at some point repaired. The total cost of ownership over a 10-year period is significantly affected by energy efficiency — a higher-rated inverter unit will return its price premium in electricity savings — and by parts availability when something does need replacing.
Not all brands have the same parts support network in Spain. When a component fails, how quickly a replacement part can be sourced determines how long you're without cooling. It's worth asking any installer you speak with what their experience is with parts lead times for the brands they recommend.
Servicing and maintenance costs
An annual service is not optional if you want your system to run efficiently and last. The Costa del Sol climate — long, hot summers, salt air near the coast, and year-round use — is harder on AC systems than in northern Europe. Systems that aren't serviced regularly fail earlier, consume more electricity, and are more expensive to repair when they do break down.

Maintenance contracts covering multiple properties or systems can be priced on request. Contract clients receive priority scheduling and discounted labour on any repairs required during the contract period.
Repair costs
Repair call-outs are charged on a time basis. The first 30 minutes cost €70, with additional time charged at €15 per 15-minute increment. Parts are charged separately at cost. Most straightforward repairs — a faulty sensor, a capacitor replacement, a drain line clearance — are resolved within the first hour. More complex faults involving refrigerant or compressor work take longer and may require a second visit if parts need to be ordered.
A note on emergency call-outs in summer: Lead times in July and August can run to several weeks across the Costa del Sol. A system that fails on a 38-degree day in the middle of the summer is a serious problem. What the cheapest quote actually costs you
Every year we're called to properties where a cheap installation has gone wrong — undersized units that can't cool the space, outdoor units positioned where they overheat and short-cycle, electrical connections that don't meet code, or systems installed without the commissioning required to validate the manufacturer warranty.
The pattern is consistent: the saving on installation is recovered in the first repair call-out, and the system underperforms for its entire working life. A correctly sized, properly installed system from a qualified installer costs more upfront and significantly less over time.
When comparing quotes, check that the installer is authorised by the brand they're proposing, that the quote includes commissioning and warranty registration, and that the electrical work will be certified. These aren't extras — they're the minimum standard for a compliant installation.
Put simply: the cheapest air conditioning is a good unit, correctly installed. Anything else ends up costing more — and usually sooner than you'd expect.
