If you own a property on the Costa del Sol, your air conditioning isn’t optional — it’s essential. But there’s a question that comes up every year: when exactly should you get it serviced?
The honest answer: March or April. Here’s why.
Why Spring Is the Right Time
By the time June arrives on the Costa del Sol, temperatures are already pushing 30°C and every air conditioning engineer in Marbella is fully booked. If your unit breaks down in July — or simply isn’t running efficiently at the start of a heatwave — you could be waiting days for an appointment.
Booking a service in spring means:
- You beat the summer backlog and get a prompt appointment
- Any faults or worn parts are caught before you need the system most
- Your unit runs at peak efficiency from day one of the hot season
- If a replacement part is needed, there’s time to order it without urgency
What a Professional AC Service Includes
A proper annual service is more than a quick clean of the filters (which you should be doing yourself every few weeks in summer). A full professional service covers:
- Deep cleaning of indoor and outdoor units
- Checking refrigerant levels and inspecting for leaks
- Testing electrical connections and controls
- Inspecting the condensate drain to prevent water damage
- Verifying the system is running at the manufacturer’s rated efficiency
Skipping this isn’t just a comfort risk — it’s a cost one. A poorly maintained unit can use 20–30% more electricity than one in good condition.
What About the Winter Service?
If you also use your system for heating in winter — and with heat pumps now being the norm across the Costa del Sol, most people do — it’s worth a second annual check in October or November before the cooler months arrive.
Two services per year is the professional recommendation for any system used year-round.
Don’t Wait Until You Have a Problem
The most common call we receive in July is from homeowners whose unit stopped working the day guests arrived. At that point, we’re fitting emergency repairs around a fully booked diary, and parts availability becomes a real issue.
A service in March costs a fraction of an emergency callout. It also extends the life of the unit significantly — a well-maintained system can easily last 15 years; a neglected one often needs replacing in eight.
